What is this template for?
This template is designed to show how you can leverage 5-second tests to quickly evaluate users’ first impressions of a design, webpage, or concept. It helps you understand what users notice, remember, and interpret within the first few seconds of exposure before deeper analysis or interaction occurs.
The insights from this test allow you to assess whether your value proposition, messaging, visual hierarchy, and key elements are immediately clear to users. By identifying what stands out (and what doesn’t), you can refine your design to ensure it communicates the right message instantly, improving clarity, engagement, and overall user experience without the need for a moderator.
What type of questions do we have in the template?
The template includes a set of first-impression focused questions that help uncover users’ immediate reactions and understanding:
Optional Qualitative Feedback
Open-ended questions are part of the study, allowing users to explain their thoughts in their own words and provide deeper context behind their immediate perceptions.
Instructions
Participants are clearly informed about the purpose of the test and instructed that they will briefly view a screen or design for a limited time before answering questions.
5-Second Exposure
Users are shown a webpage, landing page, ad, or interface for five seconds, simulating a realistic first impression.
Recall & Perception Questions
After the exposure, participants answer questions such as:
- What do you remember seeing?
- What do you think this page or product is about?
- What stood out the most?
- Who do you think this product or service is for?
