About Roger Wong

Roger Wong is a design leader and the Head of Design at BuildOps, an AI-native software company focused on commercial contractors. With more than two decades of experience in design and technology, Roger has led creative and product design teams across startups and major technology companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, TrueCar, and BuildOps.

Throughout his career, Roger has worked across consumer technology, enterprise software, B2B SaaS, startups, brand strategy, and product design. His experience spans design leadership, UX design, design systems, creative direction, product strategy, and building high-performing design organizations.

During his time at Apple, Roger contributed to the company’s retail experience, including creating work for the original Genius Bar video displays and reservation system. He also worked directly with Steve Jobs on projects including the “Welcome” animation for Mac OS X, Pixar.com, and presentation materials.

Roger has also held senior design leadership positions at companies including Samsung, TrueCar, and Convex. At Samsung Mobile, he managed a team of more than 40 creatives, while at TrueCar he built and managed an in-house creative agency. He later served as VP of Design at Convex, which was acquired by ServiceTitan.

At BuildOps, Roger leads the design organization for an AI-native platform serving commercial contractors. His work focuses on building products and design systems that support complex workflows while maintaining a cohesive and intuitive experience for users.

A major focus of Roger’s current work is the changing relationship between AI and product design. He explores how AI-assisted design tools are changing the speed and scope of design work, while emphasizing that increased production speed does not automatically mean better products.

Roger regularly writes about the future of design, AI, design leadership, organizational structure, and the evolving role of designers. His writing examines how design teams can increase their speed without sacrificing product cohesion, professional judgment, design quality, or a clear understanding of the problems they are solving.

His recent writing also explores how designers need to adapt as AI becomes capable of generating increasingly production-ready interfaces. Roger examines how the designer’s role is shifting from simply creating visual artifacts toward directing systems, defining rules, documenting design decisions, and ensuring that AI-generated work remains coherent and purposeful.

Roger also emphasizes the importance of strong design organizations. His leadership philosophy includes mentoring designers, developing multidisciplinary skills, and ensuring that designers understand not only visual and interaction design but also technology, customer needs, product strategy, and business objectives.

Through his work as a design leader, product thinker, writer, and mentor, Roger brings a perspective shaped by both traditional design practice and emerging AI-native workflows. His experience across some of the world’s most recognizable technology companies gives him a unique perspective on how design organizations can evolve while maintaining quality, strategic thinking, and a strong connection to the people using their products.
